What is Alleygating?
The term Alleygating, which deals with the securing of pedestrian alleys etc was popularised in Liverpool. Its purpose is the installation of security gates across footpaths, alleyways and in some cases vehicular access and open spaces. It is a form of situation crime prevention that attempts to reduce the opportunity to commit crimes such as domestic burglary. When installed and properly used, alleygates will control access to vulnerable target areas - usually paths or alleys at the rear and to the sides of houses.
  
Why Install Alleygating?
 Results from the 1998 British Crime Survey showed that 55% of burglaries committed occurred through the rear in terraced and detached / semi-detached houses. Moreover, an analysis of recorded crime data for the county of Merseyside shows that the pattern is particularly evident for terraced housing, with entry being gained via the rear of the property making up 72% of burglaries.
