Is Alleygating a new idea?
Alleygating is not a new idea. Gates were used to block alleyways before the Great War. As the war grew more demanding, these iron gates were taken down to help with the effort. They were never replaced. Not until 1993 did they reappear in Liverpool to combat crime. In 1997 Liverpool was used as an experiment to monitor the reduction of burglary crime from installing gates. The result was dramatic. Liverpool University undertook the monitoring and found a 50% reduction in burglary crime. These results sparked a great deal of interest within the Home Office. Bearing in mind, that for the police to investigate just one burglary costs the taxpayer £500.
Alleygate Design
The design of the Alleygates you see here is the result of years of tried and tested design modifications and installing techniques in Liverpool and throughout the Merseyside area. You may see similar designs in other areas, but the original idea was Liverpool's. The result has enabled The Action Group to develop the most cost effective, best value system suited to all types of closures and conditions.
